Profile
My name is Sophie and I am an emerging artist in Melbourne currently undertaking a Diploma of Visual Arts at RMIT. I was born and raised in rural Victoria, where my surroundings and personal experiences have helped shape my creative interests and artistic practice. I work predominantly across oil painting, printmaking and photography, with a particular focus on portraiture, movie stills, relisume and still life. Through these mediums, I explore the representation of people, emotion and the moments that capture my interest, drawing inspiration from realism, the people in my life and the visual narratives found in film.
My artistic process is intuitive and exploratory, allowing me the freedom to follow ideas and develop my work at my own pace. I often begin with a subject, image or concept that inspires me, then experiment with different techniques and approaches until I feel the work has reached a point of completion and personal accomplishment. I value the freedom to explore my interests without being restricted to a single subject or style, allowing my practice to evolve naturally as I discover new ideas and influences.
Throughout my artistic journey, I have exhibited my work multiple times at the Gippsland Art Gallery and was also selected as a finalist for inclusion in an art book. These opportunities have allowed me to share my work with a wider audience and continue developing my confidence and identity as an emerging artist. As I progress in my practice, I aim to continue experimenting with different mediums, refining my technical skills and creating work that reflects my interests, experiences and perspective.
Hello!
“Sophie’s art centres soft moments of connection and contemplation for her audience though images of familiar daily life. Through soft colour palettes, organic imagery in cyanotypes and a talent with oil paints, she creates calm and intricate artworks.”
-Sterling Wandeson (Local Melbourne Artist)
“Sophie has an excellent knowledge of colour and is able to create wonderfully realistic still life paintings but where her work shines is in her photography works. She presents a playful and meaningful subject matter in her cyanotypes with a focus on family and belonging, showcasing themes of identity and nostalgia.”
-Olivia Steinhardt (Local Melbourne Artist)
